La Pine Volunteer, Andrea Gauntlett, has taken on volunteering with a passion. Because of our current restrictions, our hospice has not been able to visit patients face to face so she checks in with them by phone twice weekly. Andrea does nurse/patient support by calling and visiting with patients and their caregivers to find out if they have any medication or supply needs.
Andrea applied to be a volunteer due to her experience when her mother passed away 10 years ago. “It was a terrible time. I did not have communication from the nurse and was not prepared for what happened. I have heard a lot of good things about Heart ‘n Home and wanted to be a part of this organization. I do not want anyone to suffer what I did. “
These care check in phone calls developed from the need to have top level communication with patients and families when nurses were not able to visit patients as often as usual due to COVID restrictions. It took some adjusting, but eventually a system was developed to make the care call, record the patient needs and get medication and supplies out to the families. Andrea is a trained military professional and a perfect fit for the task.
She faithfully comes into the office Mondays and Thursdays to make the phone calls and visits with people about what is going on in their lives and what they need. Andrea gets to pass on a lot of grateful thank you’s to staff members from families. Theresa Hane, Volunteer Coordinator, states “Our families get used to these calls and look forward to them. They know that we are walking through their journey with them and care about their needs. Andrea has been a very calm voice in the sometimes uncomfortable circumstances families are going through.”
Andrea has also participated in Convoy of Hope, Chalk the Walk, and Care Bags for staff at an Assisted Living Facility. She is here for Heart ‘n Home Hospice patients and ready to serve any way she can.
Because of Andrea’s dedication, her Volunteer Coordinator recently nominated her for our Volunteer of the quarter. We have to agree and we are thankful for her service, even during a pandemic.
Thank you Andrea!
