Physician’s Play an Important Role in Hospice
National Doctor’s Day is an annual observance held on March 30th that celebrates the contributions and dedicated work of physicians who serve communities across the country. Doctors play an integral role in hospice and we appreciate their efforts. In fact, most times it is the doctor who has the first opportunity to discuss hospice care with an individual who has a terminal illness. Early referrals are crucial to a better hospice experience for patients. The earlier someone begins hospice in their disease process, the more the hospice team can do to help. For example, pain and other symptoms can be better managed, and there is more time to talk through feelings and fears, and deal with unresolved issues that can lead to emotional and spiritual pain.
At Heart ‘n Home, our Medical Directors are physicians who provide oversight of patient care and offer support to the hospice team with assistance of establishing a Plan of Care. Medical Directors and on-staff Nurse Practitioners also visit patients in their homes and at care facilities for recertification visits. The patient’s physician is encouraged to stay involved with the care of their patient along the way.
We are grateful for the physician relationships and years of service we have together. Again, thanks to all doctors on this special day for their dedication to our communities.
