Hospice Volunteer of the Month – Bend, Oregon

October Volunteer of the Month - Bend, Oregon

Volunteer of the Month!
Elaine Wierman

Our October Volunteer of the Month goes to the very deserving, Elaine, who began volunteering for Heart ‘n Home in April of 2014.  She immediately began volunteering with a patient on a weekly basis where she helps make light meals, but mostly provides companionship for the patient.  In addition to patient visits, she has also been active in delivering flowers (usually joined by her grandson, a youth volunteer), helping with bereavement assignments, and taking a patient to her hair appointments.  Learn more about the different volunteer opportunities.

Elaine was raised in Yakima, Washington and attended college at Washington State University and University of Washington.  She lived in the Seattle area for many years where she raised her three daughters and worked as an accountant.  Shortly after becoming an empty nester she moved to Minnesota to be closer to family.  After more than ten years of Midwest winters she opted to retire in Bend near one of her daughters and her family. Her favorite pastime is being “Grammy” to her six grandchildren.  She also regularly travels to Seattle and Minnesota to spend time with family in each location, especially savoring her time with grandkids ranging in age from one to twelve.

When Elaine is not volunteering with Heart ‘n Home or traveling to see family, she can be found helping out at the neighborhood elementary school as a SMART reader, hiking, gardening, cooking, or enjoying time with her book club.  Often in the evenings and weekends she’s on the sidelines at various sport activities, cheering on her two grandsons who live in Bend.

We are privileged to have Elaine as one of our amazing volunteers.  Thank you Elaine for demonstrating the Heart ‘n Home Family Core Value, “Commit to Purpose.”
