Happy Memorial Day 2014! Stand on the Curb and Clap!
“We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.” –Will Roger
Quick … what’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Memorial Day?” Three-day weekend? Start of summer? Picnic? Parade? Of course! However, what may also come to mind are the countless men and women whose military service enables us to live in the land of the free. It is in their honor that Memorial Day was created after the American Civil War as “Decoration Day” to honor fallen soldiers. It is in their honor that we continue to commemorate their service and sacrifices on the final Monday of every May.
At Heart ‘n Home, we celebrate “Memorial Day” every day, every time with our Veteran patients and Volunteers, through our Veteran Services Program and honoring Veterans at end of life. In 2013, Heart ‘n Home sent three Veteran Volunteers on an Idaho Honor Flight to assist 30 WWII Veterans as they traveled to Washington D.C. to visit their memorial.
Locally, Honor Flight has chapters in Idaho, Oregon (includes Southern Oregon), South Willamette Valley, Portland and Eastern Oregon. Additionally in Oregon, the Bend Heroes Foundation supports Honor Flight and other Veteran groups and activities.
Between 640 and 1,000 WWII Veterans die every day in America alone and Honor Flight aims to get as many of them to the memorial as possible. In the future, Honor Flight will focus on Korean War Veterans and then Vietnam War Veterans, honoring them similarly.
So, every day, many Heart ‘n Home team members symbolically “stand on the curb and clap” as they put on their badge and head to work. Best wishes for a happy and safe Memorial Day 2014!CLICK HERE!
